I’m back in Melbourne after 9 days on the road for Tech Ed New Zealand and Tech Ed Sydney. I had a great time, meet lots of interesting people and had many great conversations. I’ve already blogged about my Silverlight session, and all the content is now available online. Thanks to everyone who came to the session, and for the good evaluations.

Microsoft New Zealand have also published a lot of content on their Tech Ed Live site, and you can now watch my full Silverlight session online. So if you missed the session, or want the full story behind the Dive Log sample I recommend checking out the video.

In addition to my Silverlight session I also sat on a “the next 18 months - the future of the web” panel. Suzanne Tindal from ZDNet picked up some of the discussion around JavaScript and has written an article questioning if Chrome’s JavaScript poses a challenge to Silverlight. On the panel we started talking about how JavaScript is getting faster and faster, and how Chrome is upping the performance bar with its JIT compilation and JavaScript Virtual Machine. I got quoted several places in the article, which is really cool. As most of you guys who read my blog know I’m deeply into Silverlight and I have no doubt that it’s going to be an important technology in the years to come. That being said I do think that JavaScript will turn out to be a bigger competitor to Silverlight than Flash for developers deciding which technology to use for their rich Internet applications.

The ZDNet article is well written and should be an interesting read if you want to learn more about mine, Scott Hanselman and Harry Piersons perspectives on the future of JavaScript, web applications and Silverlight. The ZDNet  article also got cross posted on CNet. Paul Glazowski followed up with a new article about Silverlight battling Flash AND JavaScript over at at BuzzYa and Mashable.

With Tech Ed ANZ now being history the next big event is the Microsoft PDC conference in LA in October. I’m going and hope to see many of you guys there!

Hey Jonas,

I'd like to thank you once more for your session and for making yourself available around the traps at TechEd for further discussions!

You are clearly positioning yourself as a thought leader in the Silverlight area - your work on M-V-VM and IOC is fantastic and very exciting.

With Silverlight (2) being so new there are so few patterns around... and as future professional Silverlight developers this has been worrying me and my colleagues - I'm really glad that this is changing.

I'd also like to thank your for your contributions to the OZ Silverlight list - these have been invaluable to the guys on the list, including myself.

To further develop these patterns and other thoughts it would be really cool to form a Silverlight user group - I strongly believe that there is potential and interest here. What are your thoughts around this?

Cheers,

Jordan (the guy with he ASP.NET AJAX History chalk talk)

@Robbie Thanks mate! Cool to see that you still follow my blog.

@Jordan First off - Thanks allot for the inspirational comments! I had a blast at TechEd, and really enjoyed your chalk talk, even if the TV failed you. It was so interesting that people would just cram in behind your laptop and check it out.

I have been looking into back-forward navigation (and have discovered all the nastiness you have to deal with in different browsers). There are some samples out there, but using ASP.NET AJAX is an excellent idea, as it hides this complexity, and is included in SP1.

I just saw that you blogged about back-forward navigation in Silverlight, and I'll do a follow up post later this week adding this to the DiveLog sample application.

I agree that there might be interest and potential for a Silverlight user group. I know they have been started up several places in the US. Mahesh twittered that you're doing a Silverlight talk on the next VIC.NET user group meeting. That might be a good place to discuss if there is interest for a dedicated group to Silverlight/WPF/UX development? Since Silverlight and WPF have so much in common I think it would be smart to include both... If there is interest I could definitely contribute to a meeting before flying back to Norway in December.

PS: I have a friend studying in Bendigo, and we're planning a weekend trip there sometime in the near future. I'll let you know, would bee fun to grab a few beer and talk Silverlight :)
