Just got back from Oslo and the web event I did with Microsoft Norway. It was great fun in a totally packed cinema. Close to 440 people showed up! As I promised I've uploaded the sample code (a raw dump of the current version). The plan is to work on the sample and polish it to make it a really useful starting point if you want to look at how VS2008 and .NET 3.5 can help you implement Web 2.0 scenarios...

I'll blog about the different aspects of the sample application in the weeks to come, but for now you can download the ZIP file and play with it yourself. SQL file to create database with sample data is also included. Username/password for test user is jonas/jonas.

I’ll write a new post some time tomorrow highlighting different files in the solution, and share some links to more relevant information.

Thanks to everyone who showed up, hope you enjoyed it!

Update: I've updated the post with some links relevant to the topic of the talk. I decided to update this post in stead of creating a new one since there is allready a conversation going on in the comments area.

Thanks guys!

Glad you liked it. Was a bit short on time, so much cool new stuff I wanted to go into in more detail. I'll cover various aspects of the sample app (and news in .NET 3.5) on the blog in the weeks to come.

I'll try to update the blog with a new post today with more concrete links and guidance on what to check out in the sample.

Your presentation was great! You are well versed and explain difficult terms in a very pedagogic way --> I liked very much how you used one theme (Dive site) to show all the impressive programming possibilities that are out there. It was enlightening to see the real development in progress in stead of a PowerPoint presentation with pictures of source code and finished examples. Good luck further!

PS! I was the one who asked you about mapping “the flags” to some other “image-map” than virtual earth. I have a very big image that I wish to present as some kind of a map so that the users can zoom in and out and move back and forth and so on. The map should also contain “flags” with interesting information on some locations. You mentioned that you knew some people who were working with some geodata maps (?) and using some open source software to develop their maps to function similar to the virtual earth map. So if you find out more about this type of software, please notify me.

Monika: First, thanks for the great feedback! It's feedback like this that keeps me going :)

So to your question: I talked to the guys at work, and they're building their custom Google Maps solution ontop of a sample chapter in the book "Pragmatic Ajax: A Web 2.0 Primer" from the "Pragmatic Programmers" publisher (http://www.pragprog.com/titles/ajax). I haven't read this spesific book, but I've read several other great programming books from the same publisher.

The second chapter in the book is titled "Creating Google Maps", and basically walks you through how to create your own maping solution with custom tiles. So what you basically need to do is figure out how to tile your imagary data (all online map solutions are based on tiles that are dynamically loaded when you pan/zoom the map).

If you don't want to buy the book you can stil download the sample code from the link above.

Good luck!
