What a day - MIX07, Silverlight and Expression Studio!
May 1st 2007
The Microsoft MIX07 conference is currently going on over in Las Vegas. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it this year, but I’ll sure be there in 08. I’m currently watching the keynote with Ray Ozzie and Scott Guthrie, and It’s just amazing!
Among many cool announcements, the key announcement was with out doubt the CLR support in Silverlight. Many have been skeptic to WPF/E (now known as Silverlight) since the early CTP’s have only supported JavaScript as a programming model. Today Microsoft announced that Silverlight will include a cross platform (well, at least MS and Mac), cross browser CLR. This means you now can write .NET applications in C# targeting the Mac. Channel9 just posted an interview with developer guru Scott Guhtrie giving you a great overview of what Silverlight and the included CLR has to offer. There is a Silverlight 1.1 alpha with .NET support available up on MSDN. Microsoft have also launched a new Silverlight site as well.
Another important announcement is that Expression Studio is now shipping! I got a chance to play with the Beta2 of the Expression Blend during the Imagine Cup Innovation event earlier this year. I can’t wait to build something with the final bits (I already have a few ideas and projects stacked up).
I’m just blown away by the power and the potential offered by Silverlight, .NET 3.0, .NET 3.5 and the Expression Studio. It’s a good time to be a developer!
